Student assessment and support
Students at all levels are regularly evaluated in both French and English. Effective summative and formative assessments are steered and monitored by the classroom teachers and may come in the form of quizzes, tests, or other formats. Parents receive regular feedback on their child's progress through report cards and parent-teacher conferences.
Students in Grades 5, 6, and 8 have participated in the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) each fall for proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics. At this time, the faculty is still considering the relevance of this assessment for the fall of 2011. Formal evaluations from the French Ministry of Education are currently provided in Grades 2 or 3, and Grade 5.
We believe that too much external assessment limits the effectiveness of our broader curriculum approach. To this effect, we do not "teach to the test" at FASRI. However, the NECAP has shown us how our students compare to their local peers in the tested areas.
During the school day, teachers use differentiated pedagogy and appropriate support to help students reach their full potential. When needed, extra tutoring outside of school hours will be organized by the school and at the parents' request. Teachers who tutor through the school are fully qualified with the necessary experience to instruct at the student's grade level. There is an extra charge for this service.
